Simon Whitfield gets Olympic triathlon silver to go with his gold

BEIJING - Tactics, both smart and controversial, and sheer determination gave Simon Whitfield a silver medal in men's Olympic triathlon Tuesday - eight years after he won gold at the 2000 Sydney Games.
When the sport made its Olympic debut then, Whitfield was able to wing it and win a wild free-for-all. But the strategy of triathlon racing has changed, and Canada seems to be on the cutting edge. Canada was the only country to declare prior to the Olympics it was going to sacrifice a willing teammate to get Whitfield back on the podium.

BEIJING - The medal hanging around his neck was silver but in diver Alexandre Despatie's heart it shone gold.
Despatie, who battled a foot injury and back problems, finished second Tuesday in the men's three-metre springboard at the Beijing Olympics. "My silver medal is gold to me because of all the bad things that happened to me this year," he said. "I was able to get it together."
Despatie scored 536.65 to earn his second silver in the event in as many Games. He also came second at the 2004 Athens Games.

BEIJING - Jason Burnett decided to go big or go home and it paid off.
The Toronto native won a silver medal in men's trampoline at the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday after nailing a routine that had the highest degree of difficulty in the competition. Burnett, 21, finished second with 40.7 points.
"That rocked," he said. "That was awesome."
The three-time Canadian champion was performing at his first Olympics.
Lu Chunlong of China won the gold medal with 41 points, while countryman Dong Dong won bronze with 40.6.

BEIJING - Gymnast Jason Burnett reached the podium in his first Olympics while veteran triathlete Simon Whitfield won his second career medal as Canada enjoyed another successful day at the Beijing Games.
Burnett won silver in men's trampoline. The three-time Canadian champion from Toronto expertly executed a routine with a high difficulty rating and finished second with 40.7 points. Lu Chunlong of China won the gold medal with 41 points, while countryman Dong Dong won bronze with 40.6.
British cycling team keeps rolling at Olympics with another gold medal

BEIJING - Britain's dominating cycling has team pushed the country to its best Olympic showing since London first hosted the Games in 1908.
Chris Hoy won the 15th gold medal for the British, taking first place in the men's track cycling sprint event Tuesday ahead of teammate Jason Kenny. It was Britain's third gold of the day, and the second in cycling.
Since 1908, the most Britain had won was 14 golds at the 1920 Antwerp Games. Much of its success in Beijing is because of the cyclists.

BEIJING - Silver medals from Karen Cockburn and Canada's equestrian team salvaged a day that began with disappointment and disaster for the nation's athletes at the Olympics.
Cockburn won her third Olympic medal in as many Games on Monday, taking silver in women's trampoline.
The equestrians followed with a silver in show jumping, giving Canada its third straight multi-medal day at the Beijing Games.

BEIJING - Yelena Isinbayeva made sure the Olympic athletics program ended a lot better than it started Monday at the Bird's Nest.
The Russian pole vaulter broke her own world record in winning a second consecutive Olympic gold medal. Already assured of victory over rival Jenn Stuczynski of the United States, Isinbayeva set a mark of 5.05 metres on her third and final attempt at that height.

BEIJING - Tyler Christopher lumbered down the homestretch Monday as if he had weights attached to feet.
In a way, perhaps he did. The 24-year-old from Chilliwack, B.C., carried Canada's hopes of a track medal into the Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing. But his dreams were dashed in stunning fashion when he failed to advance out of the heats in his slowest run of the season.
